I Killed My Blog

My Success with Todd blog is officially D.E.D ... dead.

I killed it.

This is a lesson I should have already known, but some old dogs never learn new tricks. A person who only knows just enough coding to be dangerous, really shouldn't be playing around with php code that he doesn't really understand.

Whatever I did, it messed up not only the code, but the database ... to the point where I was getting "not enough memory" errors. That scared me enough to just suspend the domain, and set this blog up instead. (I don't want to lose my whole reseller account).

Anyhow, the news isn't all bad. I do have back-ups of many of my favorite posts from the past 2 years. That being said, rather than just restore the database, or the xml file to this domain, I think I'm going to use this an opportunity to actually do my blog "right". Make sure I have, and keep, valid code. And re-write my posts with better titles, and content.

Over the coming weeks/months, I'll be posting new content, mixed in with the re-writes of my previous posts.

This really is a totally fresh start. It will be very interesting to see how a brand new blog progresses, given that I have a couple of years experience under my belt now.

If you were a regular reader of Success with Todd, and you have any ideas or suggestions for things you'd like to see different here on tmTips, please feel free to shoot me a note.

Thanks in advance,
Todd

  1. Hey Todd! So you accidentally killed your blog huh? I'm glad you have backups and a positive attitude. I've killed my a few times but I restored the database. I'm dangerous with code too and no longer mess with anything questionable haha. I just subscribed and I wish you lots of good luck

  2. Todd,

Hopefully you can get all straightened out with Success with Todd. Two years work is a lot of lost material. I have had this happen to me before and it definitely hurts when something like this happens.

Good luck with this blog however. Perhaps I can send some luv your way.

  3. Hi Bobby,

lol, yes it's the price I pay for being a "tinkerer". If I want the learning benefits that come from trying things I really don't understand, then I have to be willing to deal with the consequences when everything doesn't quite turn out right. Good to hear from you again. Just read the preview post about your novel. Let me know if it's done before I deploy again this fall ... that sounds like it would be a very interesting read.

  4. Hey Denise,

I may go back in later to see if I can salvage a bit more, but at this point I don't think that domain is coming back ... at least not as a blog. I like this short little domain, and had been struggling with trying to figure out what to do with it. Might as well use it as my "flagship" blog ... TM is my initials after all. Plus, I think it will be interesting to start with 0 links, 0 PR, and 0 pre-posted content, and see how fast or slow things progress.

    Thanks for dropping by,
    Todd

  5. As long as you would like this to be a flagship blog, how would you like it anchored so I can add you to one of my lists of bloggers to read. This is why we all work together to help each other out.

  6. Hi Denise,

Very kind of you to offer. Tell you what though, seeing as how I've been, at times, a bit lazy and/or indecisive when it comes to my blogging, how about I get a little more content back up here first ... then if you really are getting some value out of what you read, a link back would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance ;-)

  8. Writing posts maybe easy but maintaining the website coding and programming is quite a tedious task. Glad to know you have secured most of your data. Domain names need to be monitored on a regular basis to avoid issues. I take major interest in it. Newaz, all the best for your new start.
